During my junior year of high school, I got the privilege of being able to go to San Francisco with my friend Savanna for her birthday. One of the places that we wanted to tour was Alcatraz. We took a ferry ride to the famous island prison from Fisherman’s Wharf. We got to walk around the island and see all the different parts of the prison including the cells, cafeteria, outdoor recreation center, and the guard’s rooms. There was an opportunity in one of the cell blocks to stand in the cell and take photos. The only photo I got of me is the one below (I wish I had a better one to be honest).

The experience of being at Alcatraz was so intriguing, erie and so incredibly different than anywhere else I have gone. On the audio tour of the prison there was such good descriptions and quotes from prisoners and guards to really give the tourists an insight as to what the prison’s atmosphere was like back when it was functioning. The best part of going to Alcatraz was getting to meet a former prisoner of Alcatraz and get his autograph!
