Nikki, Tricia and I planned a road trip to Northport, Michigan the summer after our freshman year of college. The reason we chose Northport is because my family has a family house up there from when my father grew up. This helped with cost too since we didn’t have to pay for a hotel. The drive is 10-12 hours depending on how many food/gas stops you need to take.

We woke up early around 6 a.m. and headed out from Victor, NY. We went through Canada to avoid going down and around Lake Erie which would have added a couple more hours to our road trip. We rolled into Traverse City, Michigan (about an hour south of where the house is). We stopped here to get some groceries for food over the next five days. We were terrible with trying to plan and coordinate our meals but we did manage to decide to make crab and shrimp at the house one night! Once our grocery trip was done, we took the hour long drive up to Northport on the beautiful and scenic Route 22.
Once we got to Northport, we unpacked the car and decided to head down to the marina and watch the sunset. We took the short 5 minute walk down and enjoyed the stunning sunset. We were very excited to finally be there! When we got back to the house we decided to play Monopoly which would be a nightly occurrence for the rest of the trip (Nikki won).

The first full day we were there we got up early and took a two hour drive to go to Wildwood Rush to go zip lining!
Once we had a long day of driving and zip lining behind us, we made our crab and shrimp dinner. We all contributed and made a huge feast of seafood and sides. It was delicious. We ate all the food and then decided to head down to the casino in Peshawbestown to try some luck on the slot machines. Once we got back to the house that night, we all decided to test our luck again and play Monopoly (Nikki won again).

Today was the day that we rented a couple SUP-boards and used my uncle’s kayak to enjoy Lake Michigan. We hung out on my uncle’s shore front property and enjoyed the sun for the day. The water in Lake Michigan is truly immaculate. It is so clear and clean, not what you picture when you think of a typical lake. If anyone reading this hasn’t been to Lake Michigan, I highly recommend it.
Once the sun started to set and we could no longer enjoy the sunshine, we decided to head back to the casino to see if we could win at bingo that they were hosting that night (Tricia and I love bingo!). Nikki and I ended up winning some small games with prizes being around $20. We then went home and made some BBQ chicken to conclude our day.

Today was the day we were supposed to go on a horseback riding trail ride but when we went to the stables, there was a note saying one of their horses had to be taken to the emergency vet so instead we headed into Traverse City for the day. We decided to go shopping, walked an old abandoned state mental hospital that they have, and get our tarot cards read (which turned out to be the same exact “future” for all of us…). Once we got done enjoying our day we headed back home to eat dinner. We then headed to Peterson Park near the house to watch the sunset and it was spectacular.

Our last full day we woke up early and headed to Northport’s Farmer’s Market down by the marina. Once we got done enjoying all the vendors there, we headed over to Northport Beach and enjoyed our last day laying on the sandy beach and swimming in the lake. We decided to go out to dinner and treat ourselves that night. We went to the Village Inn Grill in Sutton’s Bay. We enjoyed some amazing food there and then headed back to Northport to go to a Blue Grass music concert near the marina to wrap up our vacation.

We spent the day driving back to New York and only got lost once in Canada with no service (but we still made it home!).
Overall, this trip still seems to be one of my favorite so far. It was such an amazing feeling to be able to share with my two best friends the place that truly has my heart. Ever since I was a little girl, I can remember going to this house and these towns and enjoying the company of family. To be able to share the house that I would make bread with my grandmother or do puzzles with my grandfather with made me feel so blessed. I also loved how close Tricia, Nikki and I got by the end of this trip. I had a fear going into it that we would maybe get into a fight or be sick of each other by the end of it, but that was not the case at all. We had grown close like sisters during this trip and we missed each other as soon as we parted ways. I cannot wait to make more incredible memories with my two best friends.
